It’s been a whirlwind week for Karl Juhnke, Precision Grind’s new owner. He’s spent the week with the coffee shop’s previous owner Laura who has showed him the ropes, he’s met the cafe’s suppliers, and has started to get to know the regulars who stop by the shop for an espresso and pastry treat.
Previously in a corporate information technology job, Juhnke decided he wanted to own his own businesses. He spent two years looking for the right opportunity, and kept coming back to the idea of owning a cafe. As a musician, he said he has spent lots of time playing gigs at coffee shops in the area and it’s where he feels comfortable. When Precision Grind became available, he said it seemed like a great fit. He said that he loves the neighborhood feel of Seward and its vibrant community.
When asked what his plans are for the shop, he said that he has some ideas but he’ll wait to get to know the shop, its customers, and the neighborhood better before he makes any changes or improvements. He added that he hopes anything he does will be done in a way that’s an asset to the neighborhood. One thing Juhnke did note is that he was interested in filling up the cafe’s calendar with performances by local musicians.
“I want it to be a strong neighborhood place,” commented Juhnke. “It feels like it’s not my coffee shop, it’s the neighborhood’s coffee shop. And hopefully it will be here long after I’m gone. I just want to be a good caretaker of it.”
Precision Grind is located at 2223 E Franklin Ave in Minneapolis.
